Mood Board - Video

Colour scheme

To set the chilled out indie theme we’re planning on draining the colour from some scenes and make some black and white. We think this will work brilliantly as we plan on filming one scene with the performer walking down a cobbled street. The dull colours will set the acoustic theme and relate to the vintage vibe we’re tiring to create, the old cobbled tree lined street will add to this. During the beach scene we plan on turning up the contrast level so the blue sky and white clouds contrast with the clothes he will wear.

Lyrics
We plan on having a relatable story line running through our music video as our questionnaire results told us that this was what people liked. We aim for our lyrics to match the scene in the video and be more focused as opposed to abstract. An anaylisis of the lyrics will be posted later in the research process.

Mood Board - Website

Colour scheme

This Colour scheme has been created to set the vibe which the performer is trying to promote. The following colours have been chosen to intrigue fans and set an indie/rock/acoustic feel. The black and white colours were chosen to contrast as I found this eye catching during my research and analysis and the brown has been chosen to help create the indie acoustic feel. The red has been chosen for detail and to mark important information, as it represents importance as well as power and control.

Layout
The layout of the website will be kept central as I found this worked well during my research. Images will ideally be placed in boxes to frame them, either contrasting or complimentary colours will be used to do so. We aim to have a small video on our site although wouldn’t like it to be centre of attention, this should intrigue viewers and make the site more popular. We also intend on having links on our site which will lead fans to Facebook, YouTube and MySpace pages in order to promote our performer further and attract younger listeners, these links will be placed towards the bottom of the page as shown in other promotional music sites.

Mood Board - Digipak

Colour scheme

This is the Colour scheme created to inform the readers of the genre of music which is aimed to be indie/rock/acustic. The black and white cololurs were chosen to contrast as i found this eye catching during my research and analysis.

Layout
An image will be used for the background of the cover containing a clear focal point to add depth. The image will be edited so the performer will be presented bright and colourful whilst the background is dull and greyscale. This will hopefully add to the indie acoustic feel we are trying to create. The performer on the cover will be standing to the right side of the image and the title and text will be on the left, this is because the title is should attract the eye first, its location will depend on this.

Performer’s title name
Whilst deciding on a title for the performer I came across a few which if found eye catching. I believe the following title names are eye catching and suggest the genre of music, there also unique as they have never been used for singers before, although one or two can relate to previous performers such as the Beetles. All the chosen texts are eye catching yet still need to be developed and made even more individual.

First Music Website Analysis

This site is very easy to read as all its contents are clearly presented. The W.O.B theme contrasts everything creating an exciting edgy feel. The giant X is the clear focus point of this site as the constantly changing video it contains is abstract which suggests the genre of music this band performs. The shape of the X is again an edgy factor which holds the theme of the site, and almost look like arrows pointing towards the centre of the page. The white links at the bottom of the page all contrast very well and a lot like The Maccabees website as  they are kept close together with dots in-between, this keeps the site tidy and isn’t taking the eye away from the X. The plain black background keeps the site simple and frames the video and text. The text font is also simple which overall creates a modern feel. Music is played over all the sites which is also adding interest and excitement as well as promoting the performers, informing viewers of their genre and style of music and advertising themselves.

Second Music Website Analysis

This website is very unique as the background is a music video of the band playing live, this adds interest for followers of the band as well as new viewers. The constantly blue lightly during the video adds a consent contrast for the text which is clearly displayed at the top of the site. The links at the top of the page are small yet easy to read, considering there placed out of way attention is draw more to the video in the background. The band name stands at well and is displayed larger than the text marking its importance, its bold text adds thinness to each letter creating a larger contrast as the white surface area is larger. Although if i was creating the site i would of made this text larger to make more of an impact and make it the clear focal point of the home page. The small lines in-between each link separates the pages to allow them to be closer together and easy to read, this compacts the text again drawing more attention to the background. The black strip along the bottom of the page frames the site yet doesn’t take any attention away from it as it too is dark like the background, its visibility changes as the lighting in the video changes which adds a flashy feel.

Third Music Website Analysis

All images are colourful in comparison to the background which draws attention to the performers and promotes them under a good light, sometimes quite literally. The black text boxes frame the information inside them and categorise the information, resulting in the website being easy to read and understand. The text size is clear and easy to read and the style fits in well with the laid back theme. The white text on the black background contrasts extremely well and the different coloured text add to the importance of the information as it stands out from the rest. All the links are easy to follow are easily displayed within different boxes which I believe works well. The dull brown background fades to white towards the centre of the page, this adds depth to the site and draws your eye towards the centre of the page where all this information is easily displayed. The band name is displayed clearly at the top of the page and is presented on a black background which contrasts well and was the first thing I saw when I entered the site. All the images on this site change after a few seconds which is constantly allowing the view to be looking at something new, this creates interest for the viewer.

First Music Video -Heartbeats

I researched this music video in great depth as i have recently watched a documentary on the making of this video which has lead me to love it.  The video shows 250,000 coloured balls being dropped down Filbert and Leavenworth Streets in San Francisco, the simplicity of this works magnficantly and has clearly been thought through and planned with accuracy.
This video is promoting a very laid back lifestyle which is shown by the artists attitude and enthusiasm sung to certain words. The use of colour in this video is very cleverly used as its controlled, its exaggerated to mark importance, for example the guitar is always shown bright and never dull. During the scenes where the performer is singing on stage his face and lips are always in focus in order to attract viewers attention. The bouncy ball scenes are also are contently in focus, bright and colourful and or of a clear importance. These artistic creation is a pleasure to watch mainly because the depth created in the scenes are incredible. To create a video to such a high level as is would be very hard to accomplish. The connection between the video and music is strong as this chilled song works very well with the slow motion clips.

The images above show us the front and back cover of the digipak, which I must also study. The front cover is very relatable to the video, I must keep this in mind whilst completing my video. I like the simplicity of the cover as it allows the focal point to be the name of the artist and the name of the album, despite the small size and plain white contrasting colour. The composition also intrugues me as the even use of colour keeps the eyes busy. The back cover is also very relatable to the video as is shows the artist himself. Te compostion is different compared to the front page as its set off side and the main focus is on Jose himself.

Second Music Video - The Cribs - Mirror Kissers

This video is very contemporary and fits the indie theme we are aiming to create very well. The bright colours are very appealing towards our chosen target audience. The black and white effect on the people are symbolic for not wanting to categorise the band, which is a great way to not target a certain audience. The snappy images keep the site interesting and constantly moving which intrigues the audience as there is always something different always happening, we aim to create this look in our video. Its almost hand held qualitie is a factor we aim to achive as it represents the lifestyle aimed at our chosen target audience.

Third Music Video - Twin Atlantic - What Is Light? Where Is Laughter?

I love this video as its so chilled and is exactly what style of music video i would like to create. I love the natural looking lighting used during the beach scene and the slow motion effects just add a laidback feel despite the upbeat music played over it. The gig scenes contrast with this as its very lively and gives a clear incite to what type of lifestyle the music is trying to promote. Their clothing and attitude also show their stereotype as their shown as fun down to earth guys which are very aspirational characteristics, especially for their targeted audience which i assume is both males and females aged 16-21.

First Digipak Analysis

These images  are very bizarre which may cause curiosity for the viewer.  The originality of this media allows it to be open with its colour scheme resulting in the genre being unclear. The beige background on the top three images works for a base and colour is added to it which creates a theme.  The lack of eye contact with the audience is very impersonal yet his laidback nature is suggestive towards the style of music. The relaxed text is also promoting a lazy laidback style of music and contains a lack enthusiasm and excitement which I believe is because there is no focal point. The target audience isn’t clear as there are no factors within the digipak to suggest it other than the lack of colour which may attract an older audience. I like the title and subtitle as they are both easy to read as well as being unique and link the pages to follow together. The background on the cover page (bottom right) is dull yet mysterious which i believe will intrigue the buyer, it also ties in with the subtitle “Come What Will” which i see as a good factor as it links the tile and background. The background also contains a arisen which adds depth to the cover.

Second Digipak Analysis

This digipak has a very clear theme. Its high contrast images create an interesting depth which allows the white writing to contrast well. Warm colours are used suggesting a motherly feel, the green leaves are then contrasted with this promoting a natural lifestyle.  The same shade of red is used through the images to link them all together, it also adds an excitement and a focal point for each image. Red is seen as a powerful colour suggesting the women within the images are also very powerful which is one factor which suggests the genre of music. Another factor is the instrumentals which they hold, characterising and individualising the performers .The image at the bottom in the middle contains the four women smiling this creates a positive image towards the audience and suggests the effect the music will have on the listener. In the bottom right image their shoeless feet suggest a laidback feel, again suggesting a laidback style to the music and their tanned legs along with the colour scheme suggest a Spanish feel. The small white writing contrasts well with all the backgrounds and adds a feminine feel as its small and the layout is neat. The top right image has a huge connection with the audience as the camera is at a low level and the performers are lowering themselves to our level, eye contact is also used to form a personal bond, their arms are wide open also suggesting a motherly comforting feel.

Third Digipak Analysis

The colours have been used well in this publication as there is a clear colour scheme yet they all contrast with each other. The dark background it quite unique as all the other colours piled onto our quite light and bright. The yellow writing on the cover runs parallel with the two parallel lines on the road, creating depth and drawing attention to the woman in the centre, as this is where the lines end. Eye contact between the assumed artist and the viewer creates audience recognition and makes it appear personal and forms a bond between the two. The rustic old school styled writing is a clear indication of the genre of the artist and as it handwritten a relaxed feel is created, the dark writing connects it to the page as the background is too dark. The small images add to the country western feel of this album as they are faded and slightly pixlated suggesting their old and therefore are of an importance. The background photo shows a sign post with only one person visible suggesting the artist comes from a rural area and would typical have inspiration from the older performers which their parents listened to, again suggesting the style of performer this digipak is trying to promote. Small stars have been placed around this digipak to keep the text boxes full and add an indie feel to the work. The black faded outline around the cover is again adding depth to the album as it frames the image, making it look smaller and therefore more compact and full. The odd splashes of colour draw attention to the object marking it importance as well as brightening up the digipak.

Tuesday

Choosing a brief

Why I chose to work with the people I did

Becky Thomas, Sarah Rowan and I all work well as a team as we have succeeded in doing so in the past. We are all very good friends which I believe won’t work against us, due to our hard working and trustworthy nature I believe it will allow ourselves to speech freely, resulting in our ideas to be heard, developed and bounced around the group.

We considered a number of options and believe the following three would be the most successful.

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following: a website home page for the band & a cover for its release as part of a digipak.

This option wasn't our first and our ideas weren’t the strongest but whilst a discussion we concluded that it would be the easiest to complete. We thought this due to our past experience with media as we have studied a lot of music and would be interested in expanding our knowledge in this topic. We all feel like we can contribute something towards this option due to our strengths and weakness which all work in favour of either advertising or music, for example Becky has a varied taste in music and is always in the know of up and coming bands, she can structure our research and transform notes into large paragraphs of writing which may be useful whilst creating our website, Sarah knows a lot of people involved in the music industry who would be more then pleased to take part in out project as well and being up to date with layouts which helps show individuality in comparison with classmates projects and I’m good with time keeping, I like to keep all my work up to date and check it regularly to make sure we stay and meet deadlines.
Our initial idea was to create an eye catching project following a clear theme and ideally attracting all ages, understandably this would be hard to do so we shall ideally aim to draw an audience around the age 17-21 of both genders, as this was our most popular age group as proven by our research. Our website shall attract the same audience and follow this very specific theme, it will be easy for the viewer to follow as links will we clearly displayed and will promote our performer under a positive light, creating a good role model for our targeted age group. A instantly recognisable cover is a key feature we are egger to execute well, this can simply be done by again by retaining a key theme. We shall use dark colours to promote and indie rock lifestyle although will contrast this with white writing to mark its importance which we believe will contract well with the colour and theme. We plan on branding our product by having a recognisable face on the cover who will most defiantly be the singer of the band. We believe that eye contact between the audience and the performer is essential as well of the lifestyle he creates as this will most defiantly attract buyers.

The first two pages of a local newspaper, together with the following: a poster for the newspaper & two hyperlinked pages from the papers website.

We chose this option as we thought it sounded relatively simple, due to the fact we all have experience writing articles in our previous studies. The thought of creating a poster also drew us to consider it, as we see it as a fun group activity rather than work. As this project is rather simple in comparison to the rest we all felt like we can add something different to it and make it unique from other classmates as well as our local newspaper. As there is a lot of newspapers around we believe this will give us a varied result as our research follows a large range of experienced journalists. Due to our recently built school and well know time change schedule we believe this will put us right on track to get the behind the scene gossip from our fellow teachers and classmates. This would make an intriguing article created for a very open audience. A poster for the article would also be easy to complete as every member of our group is also an art student, therefore we all have the right skills to capture a breathtaking picture of the school, along with this contrasting colours will be used to catch the eye of our aimed viewer.

A short film entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with the following two: A poster from the film & a film review page featuring the film.
We also considered this option as we thought we wouldn’t loose concentration and would remain focused throughout the completion of the task. We came up with multiple ideas for this task including a children’s animated TV programme and thought it would be a good and simple idea to use play doe to do so. This idea was inspired by films such as Wallace and Gromit and TV shows such a Smart, we believe we can create the same affect at a more professional level. Again a poster would be fun to complete and we don’t believe would take as long. Younger brothers and sisters would be great help for giving us constant feedback and will also help us massively with our review.
